Acropolis and Museum
The Athenian Acropolis is the most famous archaeological site in Greece and a prominent symbol of the Western Civilization. If you are visiting Athens you must experience a stroll on the Athenian Acropolis and admire some of the greatest achievements of ancient Greek architecture. These buildings were constructed during the Golden Age of Pericles when the citizens of Athens spared no expense to glorify their city with everlasting monuments. They include the monumental Gateway, known as the Propylaea, and three temples: the Parthenon, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike. The east and south sides of the summit also offer breath-taking panoramic views of the lower city, where some of the most important landmarks of Athens are located.

Odeon of Herodes Atticus
The impressive ruins of this monument welcome visitors to the Acropolis. Constructed in the 2nd century AD by the Athenian tycoon Herodes as a music hall it was highly esteemed in ancient times for its innovative architecture and opulent design. Today, the Herodeion remains a focal point in Greece’s cultural scene, hosting concerts and theatrical performances.
The Temple of Athena Nike
This magnificent temple was dedicated to Athena Nike, the goddess who bestows victory. Despite its small dimensions the building captivates visitors’ views thanks to its prominent position and elegant form.
The Propylaia
Although the monumental gateway to the Acropolis was by definition a functional building, its architect Mnesicles was able to imbue it with the grandeur of a temple. Despite its irregular plan, the structure harmoniously combines architectural elements from the two main orders of ancient Greece – the Ionic and the Doric order. Several of its features were inspired by the Parthenon itself. The Propylaia is widely considered one of the most elegant architectural examples in the world.
The Erechtheion
Dedicated to the worship of Athena Polias, the patron goddess of the city, the temple also housed altars of several other deities and figures from the city’s heroic past, including Poseidon and Hephaestus. During your visit you will discover why this temple was regarded as the most sacred in the city and why it has such a unique form. You will also learn the meaning behind several interesting elements of the temple, most notably the Caryatids porch.
The Parthenon
The temple sacred to Athena the Virgin, known as the Parthenon, stands out as the centerpiece of the Periclean building program. More than just a house for the gold-and-ivory statue of Athena created by Pheidias or a treasury, the Parthenon was the material expression of the artistic and ideological visions of the people of Athens at the peak of their glory. Despite being relentlessly mutilated and plundered over the ages, the Parthenon still retains much of its initial grace. The Theater of Dionysus
Located on the south slope of the Acropolis, this structure is not just any theater; it is the birthplace of the art of theater. It is also the spot where the plays of famous dramatists Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, as well as the comedies of Aristophanes were first staged.
